Trust Activity Report to Members and Friends of Annie Beck

Since the Annie Beck House  relocation on Sunday, July 27 from downtown Fort Lauderdale to Middle River Terrace Park, most of our efforts have focused on the unseen. Establishing  electric power, sewer  and water service, stripping the interior back to  the basic walls, replacing the lattice around the foundation, gathering bids for roof, window and door repairs. Continuing the funding search for the restoration has been a priority.

To preserve the Beck Cottage and create the Center, many interests have collaborated. Owner Diana Heileman donated the craftsman style bungalow to the protection of the Broward Trust and generously assisted with moving funds. The City of Fort Lauderdale leased the site to the Trust and provided tree and utility relocation services. The Middle River Terrace Neighborhood Association welcomed the newcomer to its park and will share in its use. The Broward Trust accepted financial responsibility for restoration, maintenance of the cottage and management of the Center. The Microsoft Corporation has provided matching funds for the move. The Tamara Peacock Company provided architectural and construction management services. The McLaughlin Engineering Company contributed surveying expertise. Gustavo Carbonell provided architectural assistance. Northern Trust Bank hosted a fund raising event. Other funding sources have been grants from the Florida State Department Division of Historic Resources and the Broward County Historical Commission.

The relocation which includes a restoration cost of $400,000 to $500,000, requires enormous generosity and fierce dedication from architects, painters, landscape experts, carpenters. foundation builders and floor finishers many of whom are volunteers. The Broward Trust has applied for several grants, some of which have been awarded and some are pending.
