The Annie Beck House
On Sunday, July 27, at 7 a.m., Russell Moving
Company's vintage 1951 U.S. Army truck and crew
carefully eased the pioneer family's endangered 1916 cottage away
from its home at 310 SE 11th Avenue just off Las Olas Boulevard. Its destination
was Middle River Terrace Park at the 1300 block of North Dixie
Highway, nearly four miles away At 3:30
p.m. residents of the park' s neighborhood greeted the
procession of damp enthusiasts who had braved a downpour and several hours of
delays on the seven and a half hour trek .
Utility crews from Florida Power and Light, Comcast and AT&T worked
blocks ahead raising, lowering, pushing and pulling their wires while Fort Lauderdale
Park Department crews kept pace skillfully pruning intruding
branches. The bungalow's 90-ton "tricycle" -- a steel beam platform
resting on three dollies -- eased through intersections as traffic light
experts set and reset lights at Las Olas, Broward Boulevard, Federal Highway, NE 15th
Avenue and NE 13th Street.
Known for 92 years as the Annie Beck House, the craftsman -style bungalow will become
the Annie Beck Education Cente. It will be administered by the Broward Trust and used by
garden clubs, the Middle River Terrace Neighborhood Association. conservation
groups and other non-profit organization for meetings, special events and educational
functions. The historic residence was donated to the Broward Trust by Diana Heileman.
